Amount of daily salt
Many foods already have it naturally, but also some manufacturing process uses it as a preservative. If we are also one of those who add it to flavor our dishes, surely we are taking an excess of salt.
Is it so harmful to our health?
Despite its bad reputation, it contains a nutrient that is necessary for good health. It is sodium. It is essential in maintaining nerve and muscle function and helps maintain healthy fluid balance.
The kidneys are responsible for regulating sodium levels, adjusting the amount that is eliminated in the urine. Sodium is also lost through sweating.
However, although sodium is essential for our health, when we take too much, it can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and premature death.
How much salt should we drink each day?
It is recommended that healthy adults limit salt intake to less than 5 g per day, which would be equivalent to a teaspoon of salt
Above this daily amount, many studies show that it can negatively affect blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease.
